The Pink Girl : Jessica Watson – 16 yo solo sailor around the world – hero and role model for our kids ?

buycostumes

I was stunned yesterday by the incredible media footage in Australian TV at the arrival of young sailor Jessica Watson in Sidney Harbour after her solo around the world trip.
It was on every channel, and with a 3 hour delay to the originally scheduled triumphant arrival,  journalists, a considerable crowd and even the prime minister stood and waited patiently for Jessica to get off the ‘Pink Lady’ to welcome her on the equally pink carpet. Continue reading

"I worry about ‘the angry’ sometimes."

My son said that to me today.

We had read a little Bob the Builder book, and Lofty (the crane with the horrible high pitched voice) had been worried through the whole story about something, so in the end Bob told him that he should always TELL when he is worried – because of course, as stories go, the worries were unfounded and it all turned out alright.

I asked Nemo if he understood and if he worried about something sometimes.
He’s four years old, he should not worry.
That’s when he told me, and it made me very sad. I did not know what to say.
Because ‘the angry’ – that’s me. Continue reading

My very first Mother’s Day Gift! (reminds me to clean the house)

tattoo-baby-clothes2My son brought home his first ever handmade Mother’s Day gift from kindy this week. It’s really cute. They made the kids apply fingerprints with finger paint on a stripe of paper with a little photo and then plastified it, and put a string with wooden pearls and a feather, all in a heart-shaped envelope with more strings around it. It may or may not be a bookmark actually.

There is a poem printed on it :
My dirty little fingerprints, I’ve left on every wall,
And on the drawers and tabletops, I’ve really marked them all.
But here are some that won’t rub off, I’m giving them to you.
Because I am thankful to have a Mum that’s just like you!

The verse gets a bit bumpy in the end, doesn’t it ? Continue reading

Yeah, thanks, but mummy needs no new slippers, honey.

So obviously, today is Mother’s Day . Anybody who would have missed it or forgotten about it, would have to have lived in a hermetically sealed cave for the last couple of weeks.

It’s all over the place. There is no excuse. Did You get your mum that ‘special gift’ ?

Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t mind the idea of us mum’s having ‘our day’. I like flowers and I guess for the florists it’s kind of normal to push for sale on this day. What annoys me a little is how randomly all kind of other consumer goods are labeled “ideal gift for Mum” for weeks before the day. And sometimes it’s less random, but rather role specific and frankly annoying. Continue reading

blog me not.

Since the internet came into my life, I have always been blogging.
I realize this statement sort of pushes me over to the ‘old people’ as for those born into the generation Y, the internet has always been there. Well, not for me.paper diary

I had filled a whole collection of paper diaries (understand : books!)  until my late teens. These books, some simple notebooks, some preciously bound blanc books were filled with either mundane descriptions of my days, drawings, dreams – even poetry! And I had kept them in a box and moved out of my mother’s house with them.

And then I grew up, or so I thought.. Continue reading
